How Our Love For Motorcycles Began

how ken miles' love for motorcycles began

Ken grew up dreaming about riding and owning a dirt bike.

He was constantly amazed by motorcycles. Every year for Christmas he can remember wishing for a dirt bike, hoping one would appear magically under the tree. Out in the country, riding bicycles and BMX was all Ken did growing up.

“I rode my BMX bike everywhere; Tricks, jumps, I did all those things on a BMX. I wanted a dirt bike so bad… and never got one.”

Ken saved up money from his first real job to move out of the house and reward himself with his first motorcycle.

“I saved up for 4 months and bought a Suzuki RM 125. The minute I got my leg over it I loved it. I knew from that moment all I wanted to do was ride, and I rode the wheels off that thing.”

Garrison’s passion for riding started because of his father, Ken Miles.

His childhood is told through pictures of him fascinated in stroller while Ken was working on motorcycles. The love for 2 wheels continued when Garrison learned to ride a Big Wheel when he turned 3.

“I had one of those Big Wheels, and I literally rode it until the plastic wheels broke, and when I was 4 I hopped on my first dirt bike.”

Garrison started racing dirt bikes by the time he turned 5 and it became a lifestyle, every weekend, until he was 16.

High school, college and life continued and the love for an open road and a dirt covered track never went away. As soon as Garrison moved to college he got his first of many motorcycles to come. A 2005 Kawasaki Ninja 636.

“I rode that thing for a year before upgrading to a GSXR 750. Then I rode that for a year upgraded to my 2016 Ducati Monster.”

Street bikes and the need for speed is still part of daily life for both Ken and Garrison.

All of their friends and family ride, and even though the dirt tracks are in the past it’s still a goal for Garrison.

“If I could stop everything race supercross professionally, I would in an instant.”

The adventure of growing up working on motorcycles every weekend. The exhilarating feeling of the wind and the open road. The community and family of riders. All led to realizing their new mission. Motor bike works - used motorcycles sales and mobile motorcycle service

What started as a favor for a friend changed the father and son team from owning motorcycles and avid hobbyists to business owners.

“Our friend rode in town to see his mom and we noticed his back tire was really worn down. So Garrison and I decided, while he was gone for the day, lets go and replace his tire.”

Thinking that changing a tire was a quick and easy thing to do to help out their friend, Ken and Garrison pulled the rear tire off and headed over to a local tire shop. The shop couldn’t help, and seemed overwhelmed at the idea of adding any more tires to their to-do list for the week. The local motorcycle dealership wasn’t any more enthusiastic about the idea of changing a tire either.

“Nobody really wanted to help us with tires, and that was pretty clear.”

After back and forth with the man at the service desk, Ken and Garrison little help determining the correct tire to buy for their friends bike. They purchased the tire, which wasn’t cheap, and were given an undetermined wait time, a disheartening experience to say the least.

It was clear to Ken that A) Although they sold and changed tires, it wasn’t a priority at the tire shop. And B) The dealership didn’t really care, because not one person could help them through the whole buying and tire installation process.

“I didn’t really know anything about tires, I had never purchased tires for this motorcycle before. I wanted some help and I got nothing from those guys.”

With no call from the shop after 2 hours, Garrison called to find out if the tire service was complete. Installing a single tire shouldn’t take more than 45 minutes, but the bike shop simply neglected to notify them that it was already finished.

The dissatisfaction of their whole day got them both thinking…

“What if you don’t have the skill to take the tire off of your motorcycle in the first place? What would I have done? The tire shop wouldn’t have helped me. The guys at the dealership would’ve charged an arm and a leg for me to take my bike up there, just to have them replace one tire. This doesn’t make any sense. There has got to be something easier.”

As far as options are concerned there weren’t any. You had to go to a motorcycle dealership to get any service or maintenance done. Unless you do it yourself. Riders can buy tires online all day long for good prices. Online brands help explain which tires are best, but there is still nobody to install them. Until now.

mobile repair for motorcycles in the dallas metroplex

Ken and Garrison set out to create a mobile motorcycle repair shop that is fair, honest, and convenient for the riding community, especially in the Dallas metroplex.

Meant for people who find the same passion and joy in riding that they do.

“We want to create a service that has great customer service, maybe we don’t make maximum profit everyday, because we’re getting to know our to customers. So what…  I think the motorcycle community in Dallas is the one screaming for a service like this.”

Of the 443,000 motorcycles registered in the State of Texas, 55,000 of those are in the Dallas/Fort Worth Area. There are roughly 45 shops in the surrounding areas that offer motorcycle service and repair. But still, tires aren’t a priority.

“So we started a maintenance shop. We’ll leave the heavy mechanic work to the dealers and custom bike builders. But, when it comes to maintaining a motorcycle our goal is to make it easy and convenient.”

“We pull the trailer in front of your house or apartment, you give us the keys, and we pull the bike in do whatever we need to do.”

Most people don’t want to sit and wait at a dealership, or drive over with a tire around their neck. Motorcyclists often buy their tires online and need someone to install them. Motor Bike Work’s customers don’t have to worry about inconvenient service, going out of their way to find and replace their tires, brakes, and whatever else. Mobile service, online booking, and a team of passionate people make it easy for riders like us to get back on the road as soon as possible.
